A Story: Alan
Alan is a 42-year old man with a lengthy history of mental illness and a strong desire to work. His only prior employment was a 4-month stint as a dishwasher. Shortly after being admitted to Employment Services, First Step hired Alan as a van driver in our Consumers Driving Consumers program. He proved to be a reliable employee who could be counted on to get people to work on time at varied locations throughout Eastern Connecticut. During this time Alan began to gain self- confidence and view himself as a valued member of society. After working for over a year in this position, Alan said he was ready to look for employment in the community. He and his employment specialist worked together to find employment that met Alan’s self identified goals. As a result Alan obtained a full-time position as a van driver with another local non-profit agency. Alan has maintained this position for over a year and says he likes his new job, the people he transports each day and the larger paycheck that allows him to pursue his personal interests. Alan is in recovery.
