The Oasis Center provides educational, social and skill building opportunities to consumers based on informed choice and self-determination. The Oasis Center offers over 1,000 consumer-driven morning, afternoon, evening and weekend activities each year. Activities consist of various groups and classes to increase skill building and support independent living. Opportunities for supported pre-employment work experiences and greater community involvement are also offered. The Oasis Center also provides outreach and engagement services to current members.

Modified Intensive Rehabilitation Program (MIRP) provides a more structured environment for members who need additional supports. Topics discussed are: psychiatric disabilities, co-occurring disorders, medication, relapse prevention, social skills, and daily living skills. This program is offered 5 days a week from 9:30 – 11:30 AM.

Admission Criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • DMHAS definition of severe and chronic mental illness
  • Resident of Catchment Area 11

A Story: José

José was in his early forties when he became a member of the Oasis Center 6 years ago. As a young man he had worked for several years, but because of several hospitalizations for his mental illness and another serious medical issue, he was forced to seek disability. A likeable, intelligent and social person, he had become isolated with the loss of employment. When asked why he joined the Oasis Center, he said he had some free time to fill. He quickly became involved in a number of classes and social opportunities, frequenting the Oasis Center more and more often. As his comfort level and self-confidence grew, so did the respect of others. He was elected to the consumer-run Leadership Board and began to contribute to issues that had a positive impact on consumers and the governance of the Center.

During this time, José also started attending our Business Skills Center to learn computer skills. His typing and computer skills improved so much that he began volunteering his time to help other members build their skills. Eventually, José became employed part-time in the Business Skills Center, training other consumers in business, typing, Internet usage and other computer skills that enhanced their skills for employment or for personal learning.

José continues to be a member of the Oasis Center, an employee of Sound Community Services and a person in recovery.
